Goatfish grew up in the Republic of Panama (Bridge of the Americas) listening to music from all over the world.
As a child of the '70s, he fell in love with the vocal stylings of Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Stevie and the many great soul singers of the past. His Uncle Bob had an extensive jazz record collection along with all the '60s and '70s hitmakers such as James Brown and Aretha Franklin.
He would spend many afternoons with his ear to the speakers, listening and singing along. Jah Goat was named after the legendary jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal by his late father, sending him on a journey studying Jamal's music and many other jazz greats like Miles Davis.
The Fania All Stars and El Grand Combo De Puerto Rico were also big influences including singers Hector Lavoe, Cheo Feliciano and Ismael Rivera - the great balladeers of salsa music.
His love for Brazilian music was inspired by Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimiento and Djavan, all of whom he performs their music.
He began learning to play the guitar by ear, in his teens, listening to the music of Jimi Hendrix who deeply influenced his taste for the blues. In1977, while riding on a bus, a young kid asked if he had heard of Bad Brains - at which time he bought their record which began his punk rock journey.
Today, Jah Goatfish is an eclectic artist who loves the element of surprise in his performances.
